Assam State Unit

Formation of Assam State Unit

The Assam State Unit of the World Meetei Council (WMC) was formally constituted following the 2nd Plenary Session of WMC. Its formation marked a strategic milestone in expanding and structuring WMC's grassroots presence across India.

Assam holds historic and contemporary importance in the Meetei movement:

  • It was the host of the First Pan Meetei Convention (March 4–8, 2020, Lamagram, Cachar) — the historic event that birthed the resolution to establish WMC.

  • The state is home to a large and organized Meetei population, especially in districts like Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Kamrup, and Guwahati, making it a critical center of Meetei identity and advocacy outside Manipur.

Why Assam State Unit Is Crucial?

Today, the Assam State Unit continues to play a pivotal role in mobilizing Meetei voices, protecting indigenous identity, and leading advocacy efforts for constitutional recognition under Article 342.

  • Cultural Bridge: Assam is a cultural and geographical bridge between Meeteis in Manipur and other northeastern states.

  • Political Weight: Its demographic strength gives WMC a broader platform to engage with governments and civil society.

  • Movement Leadership: Many early leaders and thinkers of WMC emerged from Assam, contributing to the ideological and constitutional framework of the Council.

  • Event Host: The state has hosted key events including conventions, leadership summits, and youth/women mobilization programs.
